» Up To 1 Million Lagosians Are Infected With HIV/ AIDS

FIVE out of every 100 people in Lagos is living with HIV and AIDS, the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) stated yesterday.

Its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Tokunbo Dabiri, explained that the high ratio is not unconnected to the large population of the state.

She spoke at the World AIDS Day programme in Lagos organised by LSACA. Describing Lagos State as cosmopolitan, Dabiri added that it its also the melting pot accounting for
about 21 million inhabitants. “This is why the disease is common in the state,” she noted.

She urged residents, who have not been tested to do so to confirm their status, adding: “The statistics the state is presently working with is 5.1 per cent .
It can be more if we all know our status. The national figure, however, is 3.4 per cent. ”

Olamide's Story For The Gods: A Nigerian Song Recommending Rape?

 By Eseoghene Al-Faruq Ohwojeheri

This is perhaps the most difficult article I’ll ever write. It is difficult because I write with a frustrating reality in mind that I am most likely wasting my time. For once I write about an evil, so evil it is unspeakable, yet I feel there is no hope; no one will come to my aide, no one will come to the aide of the women who were violated and their dignity taken away so much so that death will feel better. No, people will celebrate the culture and people will dance to its tunes. Oh, I feel hopeless! Nigerian hiphop star, Olamide

A 10-year-old boy, Usen Okon, who was thrown into the Imo River in the Ikot Abasi area of Akwa Ibom State, over witchcraft accusation, has survived the ordeal.

A non-government organisation, the Humanist Association for Peace and Social Tolerance Advancement and its partner, Child’s Rights and Rehabilitation Network, said the boy was being

The Senior Project Manager of the organisation, Mr. Ayobami Ojedokun, told our correspondent in Uyo on Tuesday that Okon was under the care of his paternal aunt, identified simply as Ekaeyen, at Etebi community in the Esit Eket Local Government Area of the state as his parents had died.

He said a few days ago, Okon was aroused from sleep by Ekaeyen who took him to her husband and asked him to confess to being a wizard. He added that when Okon denied the witchcraft accusation, his aunt threatened to throw him into a river.

Ojedokun said Ekaeyen, true to her words, on November 16, took Okon to the Imo River and threw him into the water with the hope that he would drown.

Gardener rapes 10-year-old pupil in Lagos

The police have arrested a gardener, Godswill David, for allegedly defiling a primary 3 pupil in the Ikota Housing Estate, Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim lived in the same house with David. The house was said to be owned by the suspect’s
father.

Our correspondent learnt that on the fateful day, 20-year-old David asked the victim to fetch him a sachet of detergent.
The victim was said to be searching for the detergent when the suspect followed her into the room and forcibly undressed and raped her.

While the act was on, the victim screamed for help, while the suspect’s stepmother rushed into the room and allegedly met David on top of the little girl.
She was said to have turned back and shut the door.

David allegedly threatened the victim that she would die if she told anyone what transpired between them.

Our correspondent gathered that on the following day, the victim was sleeping when David again attempted to have carnal knowledge of her. She was said to have ran out and told her ordeal to
an aunt, who in turn narrated the incident to her parents.

The matter was reported at the police station, leading to David’s arrest.
A police source told PUNCH Metro the victim had been taken to a hospital where she went through some medical tests.

Federal Government To Remove Fuel Subsidy In 2015

President Goodluck Jonathan has proposed to cut fuel subsidies in half in a bid to reduce spending after a retreat in global crude prices.
.
According to David Mark, the Senate President, the government plans to reduce fuel subsidies next year to N458.6 billion ($2.6 billion) from N971.1
billion , citing a revised 2015 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper submitted by President Jonathan.

The global collapse in oil prices is biting into Nigeria’s income, 70 percent of which comes from crude exports. Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala plans to cut expenditure by 6 percent next
year and lower the budgeted benchmark oil price to $73 per barrel, from $77.5 this year.

Kerosene subsidies will also be cut to N156 billion, from N250 billion, according to the proposal.

Amaechi should be in jail but for immunity – Presidency, PDP

The Presidency on Thursday lambasted the Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi, over  his threat that the All Progressives Congress, APC, would form a parallel government if next year’s general elections are rigged.

At the “Salvation Rally,” organised by the APC in Abuja, Mr. Amaechi, had warned that “if the 2015 elections are rigged, his party will not seek redress in court but would rather carry out what he called civil disobedience as well as form
a parallel government.”

Addressing a press conference in Abuja, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, said but for the immunity Mr. Amaechi enjoys ”the governor would have been in jail for his comments”.

He said the governor’s utterances bother on incitement, treason and gross rascality, which were enough to land him behind bars.

Mr. Okupe said there was no basis for Mr.
Amaechi to suggest that the elections would be rigged by the PDP. He said it was a shame for the governor to denigrate himself.

The presidential aide noted that the governor’s utterances were a further proof that he was not only lawless but loves anarchy in his unbridled
pursuit for power.

Tottenham Star, Emmanuel Adebayor At War With family Over ‘Juju’ Claims

Tottenham star and currently one of the best football players in Africa, Adebayor Emmanuel from Togo is presently not at peace with his family, especially his mother.
.
The footballer’s cousin has gone on air to accuse Adebayor of neglecting them, including his own biological mother.

“For the past six years Adebayor has rejected his mother and his immediate family whilst doing charity outside on the premise that our mother is a witch,” Adebayor’s cousin Margaret told Peace FM in Ghana.

“We have been thinking of his future as a footballer and did not want this issue out in the media but it is becoming too much. Could you believe Adebayor ordered his machomen to sack our mother and his own mother from a house he built
in Togo claiming she is a witch?

“As we speak our mother lives in an apartment rented by our junior brother, Kola Adebayor, who currently lives in Germany.

“My mother weeps bitterly about the issue every day. Anytime his mother or any of us (his close relatives) call and he realizes, he will quickly cut
the line.

“I personally supervised the building of his house in Trassaco and he gave us an apartment in the house. But all of a sudden he changed his attitude towards us, one afternoon his machomen came to
drive us away from the house, Margaret told the world openly”

But Adebayor who admitted having problems with his relations, denied the allegation and sai they have been the one who have refused to come forward for the situation to be resolved.

“Ask my sister Margaret whether I did not build them a house in East Legon, and what happened to it? I bought my younger sister Lucia a car worth
$35,000, where is it?”
“If they want the issue resolved they should stop spreading the news and let’s meet to resolve it but they aren’t willing to do so.” Adebayor said

My Career Is More Important To Me Now Than Having Babies- Bless Okagbare

Nigerian athlete, Blessing Okagbare who is currently unhappy with the US embassy for not letting her have her honeymoon in the country, when they denied her husband visa few days ago,
says the last thing on her mind now just after her wedding is having children.

She told the New Telegraph that her career is the only important thing to her right now, and her husband is very
much aware of this.

Hear her;
A family, hahaha, I am not planning about that now. At the moment I have goals that must be accomplished and some things to be achieved professionally, so starting a family immediately after my wedding is actually not in the schedule for me right now, no way. Honestly, we have already talked about it and my fiancé knows what
I do for a living. We have talked about it and he knows there are things I must get done in my career which are very important to me. Having kids now is out of it, there are things in my career
that must be accomplished before we start thinking of building a family. After my wedding the next agenda is to accomplish all the things I have
set out to achieve and that is it, not having babies, this will surely come later.

President’s wife shuns Dickson at Jonathan’s birthday

Wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, tactically avoided the Bayelsa State delegation, led by Governor Seriake Dickson, who came to rejoice with the President on his 57th birthday in Abuja on Thursday.

No member of the National Assembly from the state was also on the delegation.
There has been no love lost between the governor and the President’s wife over an alleged plan by Mrs. Jonathan to stop Dickson from being re- elected as the state governor.

The PUNCH had reported exclusively on Thursday that Bayelsa senators and members of the House of Representatives at the National Assembly had joined forces with the First Lady against Dickson.

The report had it that the federal legislators had formed a strong alliance to counter the moves by the governor and his loyalists to re-elect them in the 2015, through zoning, allegedly orchestrated by
Dickson.

The report added that the aggrieved lawmakers had backed the moves by Mrs. Jonathan to replace Dickson with her loyalists in 2016.

The President’s wife who attended the first event to mark her husband’s birthday earlier in the day was conspicuously absent during the visit of the Bayelsa delegation about two hours after. Jonathan, however played down his wife’s absence while thanking members of the delegation for the visit.

6 Ways to Reduce Menstrual Cramps

I was just surfing the web as usual this morning and I came across this article which will be of great help to ladies who go through pain during menstrual period.

Menstrual cramps can be a real pain for
any woman. Here are six ways to help
ease your belly pains right at home.
As women, we all know it, dread it, and are sometimes even thankful that we get it — I'm talking about our monthly period. We all know the constant throbbing and cramping pains that come with it.

To help you get through the monthly visit,
here are some home remedies that ease
menstrual cramps.

1. Exercise

This might sound a little crazy and you might be thinking to yourself, I can barely move, let alone exercise. However, brisk walking, or any type of physical activity, can help to ease your belly pain. When you're doing any type of aerobic exercise, your body is pumping more blood; this helps to release endorphins to counteract the prostaglandins and reduce your cramps. Exercising three to four times a
week is good for the overall health of your
body, but it is especially important if you're prone to painful menstrual cramps.

2. Apply heat

Heat helps to relax the contracting muscles in your uterus, which is the cause for your pain. There are many over-the-counter heating patches and pads, such as ThermaCare, Bengay, or electric, reusable ones. Or, even
taking a regular plastic bottle with hot water and applying it to your abdomen is an alternative when you don't have access to a heating pad.

3. Drink chamomile tea

A study published in the Journal of
Agriculture and Chemistry found that there might be pain-relieving properties in this fragrant tea. "This is one of a growing number of studies that provide evidence that commonly used natural products really do contain chemicals that may be of medicinal value," said Elaine Holmes, Ph.D., a chemist with the Imperial College of London. The
research found that when 14 participants
were given urine samples, their urinary levels had a significant increase in hippurate, which is a natural anti-inflammatory. Anti inflammatory drugs help to decrease the prostaglandin production, thus relieving
menstrual cramps.

4. Make sure you're getting enough vitamin D

Prevention is always better than the cure,
which is why making sure your body has
enough vitamin D is important in preventing menstrual cramps. A study found that high doses of vitamin D3 led to a significant decrease in menstrual cramps. As reported by Health.com , "40 Italian women were split into two groups: one receiving a single oral dose of 300,000 IUs of vitamin D3 and the other
getting a placebo five days before the
expected start of their menstrual periods." Their pain scored dropped by 41 percent, while those in the placebo group saw no change in their pain scale.

5. Have an orgasm

Yes, that's right — orgasms help to relieve all kinds of pain, including menstrual cramps. Before an orgasm, the uterus is more relaxed, and at the moment of climax, blood flow increases, helping to relieve the cramps. Orgams relieve the pain through the release of endorphins, which help you to feel instantly better. They also help to relax your whole body and induce sleep so you won't
feel any cramping at all.

6. Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a component of traditional Chinese medicine, which involves sticking the skin with small needles to stimulate the body at certain points. Researchers from the Oriental Hospital at Kyung Hee University Medical Center in South Korea found that acupuncture might have positive effects on menstrual cramps. The study was based on 10 trials with 944 participants. "There was an improvement in pain relief from acupressure compared with a placebo control," according to the study.

BREAKING: Security operatives take over National Assembly ahead of Reps’ sitting

Scores of State Security Service, SSS, personnel have taken over the National Assembly ahead of a crucial House of Representatives sitting today, in an enhanced security operations one official
said is aimed at denying the speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, access to the complex.

Mr. Tambuwal’s spokesperson told PREMIUM TIMES the move may be aimed at stopping the speaker.

PREMIUM TIMES could not immediately verify that claim. Mr. Tambuwal angered the ruling government of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, by defecting to the opposition All Progressives
Congress, APC.

The speaker adjourned the House shortly after his defection on October 28, and announced a resumption schedule for December in what was believed an attempt to frustrate any move by
his former party to unseat him.

Katsina Governor, Shema, caught on video urging supporters to “crush”, “kill” political opponents

A video depicting the Katsina Governor, Ibrahim Shema, prodding his party members to physically assault and possibly “kill” opposition politicians in the state, has gone viral on the internet.

The amateur video was first posted on the internet on November 12.
It shows the governor, dressed in white agbada and brown sandals, standing on a red carpet, and addressing a crowd in what seemed like a political rally. He spoke in Hausa.

Mr. Shema likened opposition politicians to “cockroaches” before asking the crowd what to do if they found the nocturnal insect in their apartments.
.
The crowd chorused “Kill them!”

“Crush them!” the governor responded,
agreeing with the crowd.

Similar calls have triggered violence in other countries including the East African country, Rwanda, where the majority Hutus’ description of the minority Tutsis as “cockroaches”, helped fired a 100-day murderous campaign that saw
over 800,000 Tutsis killed.

"Polygamy only puts a stamp on it to make legal. Most men have a wife, a mistress and a concubine. So, in a way, polygamy is every where in Africa and all over the world.”

Having a boyfriend in school did not prevent me from having a FIRST Class - UNILORIN best graduating student tells it all!

Fatima Sulaimon, a 22 year old first class graduate of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, has just proven that not staying off boys while in school doesn’t prevent one from attaining good grades.

Usually, most First Class Female graduates claim their academic success is staying off boys and not dating in the university, however Fatima Sulaiman, a first class degree holder of Anatomy
says otherwise.

With a Cumulative Grade Average Point of 4.80, Sulaiman emerged as one of the 48 first class graduates this year.
In an interview with Punch, she claimed the secret of her success is her boyfriend.

“He encouraged, inspired and assisted me to excel in my studies.” “He encouraged me. At times, even if I woke up in the night and I felt dizzy, I would just put a call across to him and after discussing with him, I would feel okay. He was more of a friend. He encouraged, inspired and assisted me. I thank God for the feat I recorded. I am happy and fulfilled because to make a first
class is not an easy feat. I did not really have social life. I am not the type that goes out. I like playing games. I sleep reasonably. I read most of the times if I am not in class. I read at least six
hours daily outside lectures and other academic engagements.

“Undergraduates should be prayerful in life. Theyshould abide by the rules and regulations of any
institution they are. If they obey school
regulations, they will not become victims.”

It is not a crime marrying my ex- wife’s niece— Kwam 1

Top Fuji act, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal popularly known as KWAM 1, has said that it is not a crime that he fell in love with his former wife’s niece, Titi.

The veteran who is promoting his ‘K1 Live Unusual concert”, noted that many characters in the bible married their relations and God did not punish them
for the act, adding that there is no need for others to judge him for marrying his former wife’s niece.

“It doesn’t make any meaning to me. Do you read the Bible very well? The Bible contains a lot of things even for generations yet to come to learn
something from. The Bible is a book of life. Talkingcabout my personal life doesn’t make any meaning. If you start tracing the lineage of some people, you
would even find out that some men may have married their sisters and nothing happened.  It is not a big deal. If they didn’t kill them then, why would somebody talk about my marrying my ex- wife’s niece and such jargons? It doesn’t make any meaning. Life is about what suits you. I don’t want to be citing examples but the Bible has taught us so
many things,” he said.

Obasanjo killed students’ unionism, says Bakare

The Convener of Save Nigeria Group and the General Overseer of Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of killing students’ unionism in
the country when he was the military Head of State in 1978.

He made the allegation at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, on Monday. The occasion was the 2014 anniversary of the International Day of Students.

He said Obasanjo, as the then Head of State in 1978, used brute force to repress the students during the ‘Ali Must Go’ protest. Some students were killed in the protest. One of them was Akintunde Ojo.
Delivering a paper titled, “Good Governance: Sustainability of Democracy, the Role of Students in the Forthcoming General Elections,” Bakare said it was unfortunate that students’ unionism had
been hijacked by unserious students.

He added that not only had students’ unionism fallen from its pinnacle of intellectual doggedness and ideological astuteness, it had also lost its activist steam, become a mere appendage of ruling political parties and a tool in the hands of corrupt politicians.
Tracing the history of students’ unionism from the
colonial days, he noted that it suffered a fatal blow
in 1978.
He said, “General Olusegun Obasanjo’s
government ordered the brutal suppression of that
protest. Live bullets were unleashed on protesting
students.

PHOTO: World's tallest man meets world's shortest man

One stands as tall as a red British phone booth. The other is the height of six stacked cans of baked beans.

On Thursday, for the first time, the man with the tallest recorded height in the world and the shortest man in the world met at an event in London, where
they posed for photos and stretched for an awkward handshake.

The occasion was the 10th annual Guinness World Records Day, which celebrates record-setting achievements around the globe. The Guinness folks
flew the two men, Sultan Kosen of Turkey and Chandra Bahadur Dangi of Nepal, to London for the unique photo op.

Kosen, 31, is a part-time farmer who measures 8 feet, 3 inches tall and can reach a basketball hoop without jumping. He became the world's tallest living man in 2009, overtaking China's Xi Shun, who
stood a mere 7 feet 9 inches.

Dangi, 74, is just 21½ inches tall and is the shortest adult human ever verified by Guinness World Records. A weaver who also helps look after buffaloes and cows in his remote mountain village
of Reemkholi, he weighs just 32 pounds.

"To be able to finally meet Chandra after all this time is amazing," Kosen said at the event. "Even though he is short and I am tall, we have had similar struggles throughout our lives, and when I look into
Chandra's eyes, I can see he's a good man."

Kosen also holds the record for largest hands on a living person. His measure 11.2 inches from the wrist to the tip of his middle finger. Thousands of people took part in Guinness World Records events around the world Thursday, with
records tumbling in Australia, France, Dubai, China, Germany, Japan, the UK and the United States. In Shanghai, 388 people went for a record for the
largest communal breakfast in bed.

The formal enactment of the legislation - Amending Canon 33 -  followed the vote on final approval by the Synod at its meeting in July of this year. Since that time the legislation has been approved in Parliament and received Royal Assent.

With the Instrument of Enactment having been read to Synod the motion was put without debate, with only a simple majority required for approval.
Following the item being passed the legislation was signed into law by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York before the whole Synod.

Following the vote Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury , said: "Today we can begin to embrace a new way of being the church and moving forward
together. We will also continue to seek the
flourishing of the church of those who disagree."

'I cannot count the stolen cars I’ve sold’ -Car Snatcher Confesses

A suspected car snatcher, Alhaji Kabiru Akorede, who was arrested by the Lagos State Police Command, has said he could not count the number of stolen vehicles he sold to people.

PUNCH Metro learnt that 42-year-old Akorede, who hails from Ilorin, Kwara State, was nabbed by operatives of the special Anti-Robbery Squad in his
residence at NEPA Quarters, Isashi, Lagos.

Our correspondent gathered that Akorede allegedly belonged to an eight-man robbery gang, who had gone to the Victoria Island area on September 12,
2014 and robbed one Mr. Albert Omisore of his Toyota Prado marked, AAA 690 BH.
The vehicle had reportedly been delivered to Moses Ogbu, a gang member, who in turn, gave it to Akorede for sale.

According to the police, Akorede allegedly re-fixed the fittings of the vehicle such as the headlights and windscreens.
However, after the gang had been nabbed, Akorede was trailed by SARS operatives. He was subsequently arrested, while the stolen vehicle
was recovered.

According to the police, Akorede had been arrested earlier in the year and was still standing trial before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court when he went back into crime. The police added that Akorede was arrested at the point of re-fixing the fittings of
a stolen vehicle.

Speaking with PU NCH Metro last Friday, Akorede, who said he went on a pilgrimage to Mecca in 2010, confessed that although he started selling stolen vehicles barely a year ago, he could not
recall the number of the vehicles he had sold.

He said, “I was working as a building engineer until 2013. I started receiving stolen cars last year. It was a friend, one Dada, who introduced me to the gang. Since I started with them, I used to sell the stolen vehicles along the Ile Zik area in Lagos.

“I cannot recall the number of the vehicles I collected, but they may not be less than 20. There were about three Toyota Highlander which I sold for N1.2m each. I also got four Toyota Camry,
which I sold for N600,000 each.”

US backing Boko Haram; Jonathan, Buhari should not contest in 2015 – Gumi

Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi has restated his position that the country would experience worst times if President Goodluck. Jonathan and Gen. Muhammad Buhari contested the 2015 presidential election.

In an interview with Sunday Sun, he disagreed with the belief that Boko Haram was a reaction against
Jonathan’s government.

“I don’t buy the argument. Obasanjo is a
Southerner, there was no such thing when he was in charge. Gowon is a Christian, there was no such thing during his regime.

“But Maitasine started with Buhari and he
mercilessly bombarded them, before Shagari inherited it. Buhari and Shagari are Muslims. So, that dismisses the earlier argument. But assuming it
is true, does the President want the killings to continue as he’s presenting himself for re-election?

The wisest thing to do, for the sake of my children, his children and your children, is for him not to seek re-election and let’s bring somebody that will not trigger reaction from any section of Nigeria.

“You know Buhari is very popular here in the north. But I said to him, please do not seek to be Nigeria’s President. You know why? It will trigger reaction from another section that doesn’t want him.

someone to death than it looks in the movies. She fought so Damn hard." Then he wrote again when people doubted the story "Check the news for port orchard Washington in a few hours,”  then he wrote that Amber son's

Man Arraigned In Court For Failing To Look After His 17-Year Old Wife

This story sound wierd to me. 17-year old wife?????
The police have arraigned a 35-year-old man, Simeon Ekwuruke, before a Lagos State Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly neglecting his 17-year-old ‘wife’ and denying her the necessities of life.

It was learnt that Ekwuruke and his wife (name withheld) were not legally married though she was living with him and they had been dating since she was in Junior Secondary School 2.

The teenager was said to have become pregnant when she was 13 years old, before she started living with Ekwuruke.
Within the space of four years, the couple were said to have had three children while living in their apartment on Ladafe Dada Street, Ikate, Surulere, Lagos.

The lady became pregnant with her fourth child, when Ekwuruke allegedly assaulted her, claiming he was not the father of the children. The police said the victim alleged that Ekwuruke had also not fed her for the past two months.

He was consequently arrested and arraigned at the Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting at Ebute Meta, on one count of failure to provide for his household.
The charge read, “That you, Simeon Ekwuruke, between the month of September and October, 2014 at Ladafe Dada Street, Ikate Surulere, Lagos,
in the Lagos Magisterial District, being charged with the duty of providing for (daughter), aged one and half years, and (wife), aged 17 years, the necessities of life, did unlawfully fail to do so, whereby their lives and health are likely to be
endangered and thereby committed an offence.”

The police prosecutor, Corporal Cyriacus Osuji, said the offence was punishable under Section 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011. The section prescribes two years imprisonment
for the offence. Ekwuruke pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Demi Ajayi, said the case should be brought into her chamber because it was a family matter.
At the end of the private deliberation, the defendant was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

The chief magistrate also ordered that Ekwuruke, his ‘wife’, and the three children should go for a DNA test, to ascertain the paternity of the children.
The parties were told to maintain the status quo, while the case was adjourned till December 3, 2014.
