BOKO Haram leader Sheikh Abubakar Shekau has
issued another chilling Youtube video in which he
promises to disrupt Nigeria's forthcoming general
elections indicating that he and his fighters will blow
up polling stations.
In the video which lasts for 11 minutes and 57 seconds, Sheikh Shekau promised that Nigeria's elections would not hold in peace. Already, Boko Haram has carried out two suicide attacks across northeastern Nigeria during the election campaigns, killing 38 people and Sheikh Shekau has promised more.
Sheikh Shekau said: “This election will not be held even if we are dead. Even if we are not alive Allah will never allow you to do it.” Nigeria's presidential, senatorial and House of Representatives elections are due to hold on March 28, while governorship and state house of assembly elections will take place on April 11.
Speaking in Hausa, Sheikh Shekau published the video on Twitter, representing changing media tactics as previous messages were distributed via DVD. In the video, Sheikh Shekau was shown in unusual clarity in front of a solid blue background, dressed in black and with an automatic weapon resting to his right.
He also claimed responsibility for a weekend attack in the city of Gombe, which the military says was repelled. Despite Sheikh Shekau’s threat, experts doubt that the Islamist rebels have the capacity to disrupt voting nationwide, although polling officials have conceded that voting could prove impossible in parts of the northeast. Nigeria recently postponed the elections for six weeks due to the security threat presented by Boko Haram.
