NANS CALLS FOR THE REMOVAL OF INEC CHAIRMAN, PROFESSOR ATTAHIRU JEGA OVER BIASED AND UNJUSTIFIED ACCREDITON OF ELECTION OBSERVER

Read the press statement below:

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) which comprises of over 40.1 million Nigerian students; devoted in rendering positive change, expanding the frontiers of learning and an association which is irrevocably committed to the Nigerian Project and therefore sees a future of endless possibility stretching before us, knowing well that the time is now to shake off our slumber, slough off our fear and pay the good debt we owe the past and future generation, is using this medium, first and foremost, to categorically condemn the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its deliberate omission of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) from the accredited observers recently published by INEC despite the immense contribution of NANS to the advancement of democratic rule in Nigeria since time immemorial.

Furthermore, NANS views this unjust omission as a calculated attempt by INEC to disenfranchise the apex student body from observing the election at close quarters. It is a deliberate move to silence the voice of Nigerian students, who form the bedrock of the future, from being aired at this pivotal stage of our nationhood.

NANS insists on One Man, One Vote, but it is only with credible observers that One Man One Vote will count! After scrutinising the list of accredited observers released by INEC, a total of 88 observers were accredited; 72 locals and 16 international observers. INEC accredited fictitious and non-existence youth groups who have contributed little or nothing to the advancement of democratic rule in this country at the expense of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

In addition, INEC accredited a foreign student body, Africa Students Association of Ireland (ASAI), and didn't deem it fit to approve the request to be accredited as electoral observer submitted by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

In lieu of the above, NANS calls for the immediate removal of the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, as the students movement in Nigeria no longer have confidence in his ability to be an unbiased umpire in the forthcoming general election as shown in the biased, fictitious and non-existent groups accredited as observers, at the detriment of genuine, competent and important groups, such as NANS, approved by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under his watch.

In addition, NANS urges INEC to do all in its capacity as the electoral umpire to rectify this anomaly. We implore INEC to tighten their belt as the election that will determine our fate and destiny in the next four years approaches. In the history of Nigeria, an end must be brought to dysfunctional educational system, comatose healthcare services, anti-democratic practices, bad roads, poor economy.

Political freedom and equality of social justice must be strengthened. It is only a credible election that shall guarantee such benefits of democracy. It is only credible observers that will score the electoral process and the electoral body before, during and after the polls. The scenario of June 12, 1993 General Election which cannot be erased from the minds of the teeming Nigerians should be a lesson to INEC under the present able leadership of Professor Attahiru Jega in ensuring a fair election in February, 2015.

The failure of INEC to conduct a transparent election that illuminates joy in the heart of the populace will mean bringing the four walls of our institutions to the street in serious agitation and confrontation without admitting our feet at the negotiation table. SIGNED: Comrade. Ayenuro Timileyin Gbenga Vice President, (National Affairs) National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS)
