LASU Fees: Lagos Govt To Make Decision Known Today

Following series of protests by students of the Lagos State University (LASU) alongside various activist groups, the Lagos State government has said it will make its final decision on the LASU fees known today. The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Lateef Ibirogba, who made this known last Wednesday, described the protests as unnecessary, as, according to him, the government was taking steps to resolve the issue. He said the committee set up to address the LASU fee issues would submit its report today, appealing for calm as the government worked on a final resolution of the issue. The students had, last week, organised protests, first on Tuesday, during which the police had to repress them, while some students got arrested. The students, again, on Thursday, took their protest to the Governor’s Office at Alausa, blocking the entrance, which they turned to a kitchen, where they cooked beans and threatened not to leave till they the fees were reduced by the state government. However, they had to leave when there was a rainfall. Again on Friday, another protest was taken to the Governor’s Office, causing intense traffic snarl.
