A very depressing report from PM News revealed that a 30-year-old First Class graduate of Economics from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Moses Murtala Aminu was shot dead by a constable with the Nigerian Police. On the fateful day, last week Sunday, the victim left his No. 67 Ahmadu Ahidjo Street, Narayi High Cost family residence for a party in Barnawa, Kaduna State in northern Nigeria. He never came back alive.

According to his friend and eyewitness, the police constable was identified as Alex Okpe and was beating up Aminu’s girlfriend outside the party venue when he tried to intervene. At that moment, the police constable got angry, reached for his jeans trousers, brought out his gun and fired, the bullet went straight into Aminu’s heart. For how long will our police continue to kill us needlessly? For how long will the Nigerian nation continue to arm people who obviously have psychiatric issues? For how long will illiterates with guns continue to waste our brightest minds over flimsy excuses and nauseating accidental discharge? Think about that, please.

After killing Aminu, the constable did not stop his kolomental there. He fired twice in the air to scare the people away before escaping on his alupupu (motorcycle). The late Aminu was popularly known as Muri and Moses Andrew, a friend who was with him stated that there was confusion and chaos at the Time Out Lounge, venue of the party after his friend was shot and the policeman made his escape.

He said:
“We were confused while trying to revive Muri, when a guy informed us that he knows a friend to Okpe’s girlfriend that had left the party for a club called X-One at Barnawa.”
From there, they moved to X-One and met her there. He further narrated:

“We picked the lady who identified the policeman who killed Muri as Alex Okpe, and that he serves at Kakuri Police Station but deployed to guard Nigerian Brewries Plc.”

The killer policeman has been tracked down and arrested by officers from the Barnawa Police Division. The incident has also been confirmed by Femi Adenaike, the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police and he said that it was true Alex Okpe was arrested and he confessed to the killing while he was interrogated. He said that Okpe claimed that he fired in ‘self-defence’ when he and his friends were trying to fight him over his girlfriend. According to the police, Okpe was not even sent to Barnawa as at that time and he will be tried and dismissed if found guilty. The police boss said:

“The suspect is in the cell and we have commenced investigation. And if he is found guilty, we will give him an in-house trial and summary dismissal so that he can face the law for homicide.”

In Muri’s family, the veil of sadness is thick as his blind father, Mohammed Jimoh told a press conference that as a Muslim he has accepted the death of his son and breadwinner as an act of God (when are Nigerians going to freaking wake up for God’s sake and fight for their freaking rights? Ehn?) Muri’s father also said that if his son was to die, it should not have been in the hands of the same policeman who was supposed to protect him (I always say that a thorough psychiatric assessment must be done for any Nigerian you are going to give any kind of weapon!). His father continued:
